Stretford is located within the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester and has a population of 37,500. The town is situated on the main A56 road between Chester and Manchester. It is found between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal and is 3.8 miles to the south west of Manchester city centre, 3 miles from Salford and 4 miles away from Altrincham. Neighbouring Stretford is Chorlton-cum-Hardy to the east, Urmston to the west, Salford to the north and Sale to the south. The Bridgewater Canal runs through the Town. Stretford was originally a part of Lancashire and during the 19th century was an agricultural village known as Porkhampton. This name came from the large number of pigs produced for the nearby Manchester market. In 1894 the Manchester Ship Canal arrived. This coupled with the development of Trafford Park industrial estate assisted in the inevitable industrialisation of the town and had a substantial effect on the growth, increasing the population over the course of 10 years by 40%. This industrialisation led to the decline in the towns agricultural roots.
