Hulme is a residential suburb less than one mile south of Manchester city centre; the wards of Moss Side, Whalley Range, the City Centre and Rusholme border it. To the west it borders areas of Trafford and Salford. Hulme is within walking distance of the city centre, particularly the northern region, which is just within a few hundred yards of the G-Mex centre.
Hulme is Manchester’s biggest regeneration success story. It was a hugely deprived, run-down area with high crime and unemployment rates until the Hulme City Challenge was launched. This was a £37.5 million government-led initiative that aimed to tackle every problem in the area, from clearing slum housing to reducing crime rates.
Fifteen years later, Hulme is practically unrecognisable The area is home to a huge variety of new housing, from town houses and maisonettes to show piece developments such as the Little Alex, which is designed to be as eco-friendly as possible. One particularly interesting building is Homes for Change, a housing co-operative on Old Birley Street.
Though much of the housing comes without a garden, Hulme Park and nearby Alexandra Park provide some much-needed green space. There is a huge Asda and a sprinkling of local shops, though there are only two bars and no restaurants to speak of. Having said that, Deansgate is a mere ten minutes away.
Hulme now attracts large numbers of young professionals who mix comfortably with the multi-racial community. As a result the area is becoming steadily more affluent, and house prices are continuing to rise as demand grows among people who are priced out of the city centre.
